Pongal Festival 2019
Pongal is a harvest festival that is celebrated in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This festival is celebrated for four days and is amongst the most important and popular festivals for Hindus. The festival got its name from a Tamil word which means ‘to boil’ and lies in the month of Thai. Bhogi festival- First day of Pongal
The first day of Pongal, Bhogi festival, is celebrated in honor of the God of rain, Lord Indra. This day the useless or unused items from the house are burnt into a huge bonfire that is made from woods or cow dung cakes.
Thai festival- Second day of Pongal
On this day, the Tamils perform a special ritual in which milk and rice are boiled together in a pot. A turmeric plant is tied along the pot and is kept out in the sun as an offering to the God of Sun. Not only are these, but also coconuts, sugarcane sticks and bananas offered along with the pot of rice and milk.
Pongal Kolam is yet another important aspect on this day which is a hand-drawn traditional design made of lime powder that is made on the entrance of the house. This is drawn early morning and only after having a proper bath.
Mattu Pongal- third day of Pongal
The third day of Pongal is called as Mattu Pongal in which cattle, especially cows and bulls are worshipped. The horns of the bulls are painted and their necks are decorated with bells and garlands.
According to the ancient beliefs, it is known that Lord Shiva had sent his bull Nandi to earth in order to give a message to the people that they should take bath everyday and eat once a month. However, Nandi gave an opposite message asking the people to eat everyday and take bath once a month. On knowing this, Lord Shiva got angry and asked Nandi to stay on Earth and help the farmersa with ploughing the fields. Therefore, on this day people worship cattle.

Kaanum Pongal- fourth day of Pongal
On the last day of Pongal, Kaanum Pongal, the leftover Vann Pongal and sweet Pongal are placed together on a clean turmeric leaf in the courtyard of the house. Along with the Pongal, beetel nuts, beetel leaves and sugarcane are placed. Women carry out this particular ritual in order to wish for health and prosperity of their brothers.
